Thing about hair

Nathan has this thing about ladies with long hair and it has to be untied in any fashion. What makes me say that? Well i tried on quite a number of occasions where i would tie my hair up during class and at home and he would refuse to be managed by me be it carry, play or feed. Whilst he was younger he would express his displeasure for tied hair through body language ie pout lips, crossed arms and 180 turn to avoid looking at me. I came to understand that its the hair issue when he was 18 months but pondering back it may have started earlier when he would often run towards the door to welcome us but became cold towards me when he caught sight of the tied hair.

Well Now at 20/21 months he verbalises his request and gives me specific instruction such as " Don't tie hair please" or " i don't like mama tie hair". And he will even attempt to help remove or hold the clip for me. Suppose its a guy thing... You know man prefers woman with long hair a d preferably let down.

French cuisine

Since my department's team building where we learnt how to stir up coq au vin and berry trifles i've been so wanting to try re-cooking them again! Last week i managed to do some grocery shopping and cooked up a storm!

The chicken was so flavourful... Ok it didnt look wonderful on pic but the rich red wine flavours mixed with celery, carrots rosemary makes the aroma irresistible! Though french cuisines usually comes in tiny helpings, we thought the chix will go down wonderfully with some mash potato puree ( combination of both yellow and sweet potato) to add on as side.

Natalie and Nathan both fell in love with the Berry Trifle dessert! It was so easy to make! I whipped up the mascarpone cheese with cream to give it some volume and rich creamy flavours. We used cranberry juice to soak the sponge cakes and fingers and layered the dessert with lots of fresh cherries and blueberries! Yums!!

So how did it all go? In Nathan's closing statement he said, " i like it, it's nice". Fully stringed sentences!!

Princess at school

We thought we could shield her from the princess craze phase, but external influences such as her peers and media are simply too difficult to shut out. And yes Natalie is now obsessed with the princess theme... From tiaras to gowns ( blue preferred since its cinderella's gown colour, but it was never her favourite in the past) to wands. She will insist that her father enact the entire story with her acting as the lead actress - "Cinderella" and Nathan as the PRince who found her glass slipper and ends up living happily ever after.

Today she woke up wanting to live that dream and insisted on wearing the beautiful blue dress and tiara to school. We thought no harm done and might as well maximise utility of the outfit.

As a bystander i could sense the power of "the princess look"! many of the passerby will smile and whisper "princess" amongst themselves. Little girls stare in awe at the blue dress fantasying their next buy. I could tell that she is enjoying all that attention, though appearing rather shy in public, she walks with her head held high and tries her best not to step into puddles. She will look at me shyly and have this happiest grin when she hears people remarking about her outfit. Well she is definitely getting the princessy treatment as she counts on her loyal footman daddy to ferry her in her 'pumpkin' carriage from one location to another! And the dependable Nathan will exclaim "welcome home princess" when she pops home for lunch.

By the end of the day, Natalie had loads of fun and so did we as loyal servants waiting on the highness for a day... Erm and lets just restrict it to 1 day first k princess Natalie!

Newborns

Visited Sarah after her delivery today and recalled how tiny Natalie and Nathan were when they were born! Such little fingers and toes... and how soft and cosy they felt in your arms! At first acquaintance these little ones were not shy about fulfilling their cravings for colostrum and its a wonder how they could expertly seek out the source, shut-eyed, throughout the entire search operation without prior training! Such Pure display of innate survival ability!

No matter the amount of prenatal research or preparation seminars that you attended to psych up for the tasks of sleepless demands ahead, mothers can never predict the amount of love for their kids until you get to feel your child in your arms for the first time. In that instance, the connection and bliss that you are feeling somehow amazingly activates all the underlying maternal instincts and make all those sacrifices so worth their while!

You will also be amazed at how those million of feeds and hours spent on expressing simply worked naturally, in tuned with your body clock, and 12 months simply zoomed by without your noticing! How you forgot the drain and tiredness or aches that your body felt as you work through the night shifts. Suppose daddies may feel the benefits more as demands to help with all that washing and sterilising is lower during the breastfeeding period .. Well at least Chris did enjoy that 1+ year break without having to prepare bottles at the break of dawn and in the middle of night.

I am again reminded of how fast these sweet little babies grow up and gain that ability to run all over the house without you even noticing it! So enjoy that first stages of life as much as you can as those moments are irreversible, and you would want to look back and reminisce on all that wonderful history and give yourself a pat on the back for the efforts that you've put in for your children!

'No' -Counterwill

Nathan has a tendency to respond no to every single question now and most times he resonants a strong rejection to our requests. Not that he doesnt know how to respond in other ways or words .. In fact he could ask you real nicely in full sentence such as " may i have some rice please" and many other non-no phrases. But these days "no" became his favourite. And he loves the exchange with jie jie when she ask "yes nathan?"
He will usually respond with consecutive "no"s. funny thing is when we change the question to "do you want ice-cream" he will answer "yes" so he is listening and wilfully going against the flow. Apparently this is a display of counterwill. Did some research and found an interesting site to explain the behaviour. Key principles to note as follows:-

a. Avoid reacting negatively to counterwill in your child.
b. Collect before you direct.
c. Let your child practice making some decisions in his life.

http://www.transformativeparenting.com/why-children-say-no/

"A critical key to understanding how this works is that the connection between parent and child, their attachment, is not always “on”. By this I mean that if your child (especially a young child) is currently very focused on someone or something else, you do not necessarily have his attachment energy. The relationship is not active in the moment. A child is not meant to take direction from someone to whom he is not currently attached, so you are much more likely to experience counterwill."

Keys to transforming counterwill

"There are several principles I teach parents in our classes and in consults for managing counterwill, and I want to address a few of the most important. The objective is not to completely get rid of all resistance in our child. That would be impossible and not very good for them. What I would like to do is help you make counterwill a much more manageable dynamic.

The most important advice I give parents is not to let counterwill cause disruption in their relationship with their child. It is common for parents to react very negatively when their child is resistant. The temptation is to take it personally and to resort to saying and doing things that make the resistance worse — including taking things away from the child or using separation based discipline like time outs or 1-2-3 Magic. As I’ve explained, counterwill is strongest when there is a lack of connection, so creating more disconnection will only lead to stronger resistance.

The second thing I recommend is that you strive always to “collect” your child before you direct him. This is probably the most common advice I give and is directly from Dr. Neufeld’s book and courses. Collecting means to connect with your child first. Do not assume the connection is there at all times. By providing some sense of connection and closeness before asking a child to do something, we can avoid a lot of resistance. With a young child, you might sit next to him and share in what he is doing. Get connected and then gently guide him to what’s next.

Lastly, I recommend that you find ways of helping your child to exercise his “will muscles”. Children (and many adults for that matter) do not yet have a well-developed sense of will and need to have the space and opportunity to practice building it. This means that you put your child in charge of something when you feel it’s appropriate, or let him make decisions about certain things — as long as you’re OK with the potential decisions. Dr. Neufeld calls this the “little steering wheel”. Think of those shopping carts at the grocery store that have a car attached in the front. Your child gets the feeling of being in control but you are really doing the steering. An example is giving your child the choice between two different foods you’re willing to prepare at dinner time. The child gets the experience of choosing, but you don’t have to cook something you don’t want to (or can’t).

Of course parents need to know that their children will, for the most part, follow their lead and do what they say when needed. It’s just important to understand that this works better when our children want to listen to us, not when we force them to listen. Children who are deeply attached to their parents want to follow their lead. In fact, it feels wrong not to."

Tax matters

Tomorrow is the deadline for tax filing. I just filed mine... Maximising all reliefs that are relevant now that we have 2 kids.
Noted the following as i moved along the form...
Its Great that the govt is allowing wife and parents to claim for ns men relief but note if you are a parent with 2 or more sons who are all NSmen the maximum NSman Parent Relief is capped at 750 (relief of 1 headcount) Sad huh? 750 is already a low figure to begin with and insignificant against a typical individual drawing an annual income of 5 digit. Little is being considered for Singaporean parents who potentially contributed more to the security of the country by supporting the conscription of their husband and sons as clearly tax reliefs are not a lot to give by the govt and with less than ideal no. of locals to support the economy and protect the nation i feel it will be the least that the govt could help incentivise the parents.

Wedding

It was the first church wedding for the kids and my first to witness the groom tearing with joy as he watched his own video montage and waited at the aisle as he received his wife! Amazing first lessons of what the couple are doing, what's marriage and finding a boyfriend who loves her as much for Natalie ! ;)

Class upgrade

Nathan has been upgraded to the next level in school. Though he is the youngest in class, at 19 mths, we could tell that he enjoyed the session and with the opportunity to respond to teacher's questions made class seemed more interesting.

Today he pronounced "h" with its phonics sound and said hit as he struck the piñata. I am so proud of him! This little boy progressed so quickly under his sister's tutelage! Amazing how the desire of wanting to do things together spurred both his physical developments and speech! Now he just needs to learn to concentrate and complete tasks with fewer distractions and learn to manage his emotions better, which will come in due course.

Swimming

Natalie is slowly getting the hang of placing her face under water and holding her breathe at the same time. Swimming to her is lotsa fun riding and piggy backing Us. Nathan follows everything that his jie jie does so in many ways advances much faster than his peers! He was able to kick and lie back as he swims from one end to the other. He is more trusting and listens to instructions pretty well. Natalie on the other hand is a little more fearful and dislike getting her face wet. Swimming to her means playing with water where movement is restricted to walking and riding on other moving bodies and occasionally float with full assistance :) got to bring her for swims more often so she will be less fearful of water!

Writing in the car

Traffic these days are really bad, but it gave me time to update my blog. So I will try to provide an update during the period that chris took the wheels. I will take over after he reaches his workplace and continue with the journey to office. Mornings are usually pretty rush where we end up eating breakfast and doing makeup in the car. Bad traffic with long holdups gave me more time to do other things other than chat with chris. Cause he gets affected by silly drivers and need full attention swerving through lanes. Well i am not bothered as long as the frustration is not directed at me. So blogging is good as it gives me time to reflect on all the good thoughts of my children growing up.

Staycation at resort world

We organised a stay-cation of 3 days over at RWS and the kids enjoyed themselves thoroughly!

Day 1
Adventure started when we reached the car park and unloaded our bags and the kids. Not knowing where we were since rws consist of 5 hotels, we landed at the Casino area which is quite a distance away from Hard Rock! Security came to our rescue and we were escorted on a buggy which miraculously managed to fit us and our many luggages! The kids enjoyed the ride as we zipped through car parks and went up and down hill!!

Upon reaching, we were fortunate to be given early check in at Hard Rock Hotel. Once we reached the room everything else seemed to automatically experience a vacation slowdown mode.

We were supposed to drop our belongings and rush to UNiversal Studios, but the kids were so happy with the room and refused to leave. Plans had to be aborted and we arranged with Dan and Sarah to meet at S.E.A aquarium instead.

The Aquarium was amazing and the kids were simply attracted to the huge display of colourful fishes. Natalie and Nathan decided to mimic the way fishes were swimming and lied flat on their tummy in front of the tanks thinking that they were fishes too! We were amazed with the reaction!! It was such a natural thing to do.. the attraction to waters and swimming like Ariel with the colourful fishes. They loved touching the sea star! No sense of fear just pure enjoyment even when the fishes are way bigger in size. The tank that kept the manta rays was the best attraction ranked by princess. She said the manta ray is like an umbrella, sheltering the little fishes hiding underneath. The rays will swim so close to you and it felt like you could almost touch it. Nathan wanted to sit and watch the fishes swim by and doing so lying down made it seem like they were really swimming with them.
Yiyi: natalie, do you see those human looking fishes in the tank?
Natalie: yiyi, they are divers!
Papa comes along
Ma: what are those papa?
Pa: fish keepers!
Natalie: those are divers!
Pa: erm u know zoo keepers look after the zoo, so these guys look after the fishes what..
(Eyes rolling...)
Day 2:
Spent the entire day at USS and we were stuck at transformers end for a really long time!! Kids loved watching the "human" roller coasters zooming by and Nathan exclaimed "see mama! See papa! See yiyi! See popo!" A million and one times!
Natalie didn't like the robot at all and kept going through the map to find the route to the castle!
Nat: papa i want to go to the far far away castle! Thats where the princess stays right? I want to go there! (She points on the map). Interesting... She knows how to read her maps!!
Well the day seemed to have past really fast and we didn't even manage to get to the jurrasic park zone! Well there is always the next time!
Day 3: breakfast at coffee bean followed by Free and easy at the swimming pool at hard rock. It was Nathan's first experience with sand and like his jie jie he didnt like the feeling of sand at all! He refuses to step on it and clings tightly to me. Such a cutie ;) well, jie jie had fun building her castles.

We checked out and without papa it was tough but we managed with bellboy's help ;)
This was followed by late lunch at chilies and we continued shopping around till 6ish. Not forgetting the brownie pitstop that we always make at the rws invite lounge before we stroll back to the car.

We certainly had fun at this stay-cation!!

Morning peck

Nathan gave me a morning peck on the nose when he woke up today! I was pretending to be asleep but secretly watching his every move before he curled up in my arms next to me and fell asleep again! Thanks for making my day cutie! It will be a tough back to work day after 2 weeks as a stay home mum. I think i will miss being home for the kids! Perhaps its time i consider it full-time?
