Natalie's birthday

We are again reminded of how quickly the time past with each birthday celebration.  Natalie is now officially 6 years old! And next year she'll be in primary 1! Can't imagine where the time had disappeared?  Felt like I had missed the entire phase of her growing up! Looking at her photos from birth to the current responsible, mature little girl, I can't be more blessed with her existence!  As the eldest sibling,  she sets a great example at home for her brother and shows kindness to people around her.  Lovely as ever as she gains knowledge and learns to care for her younger siblings who can be very demanding at times.  Although fights are not unusual, I know she tried her best to give in  before resorting to physical retaliation as didi is constantly testing his limits at the "terrible 3 stage".

At school the teachers will always sing praises of her whenever we visit her class.  This year she is taught by Ms Preti (pretty). She misses her ex-teachers, especially  王老师  but adapted well in k2. She is selected to be the class monitress and this meant a chance to speak up more as she manage the order of the class.  I am glad the teacher recognises her potential and provides  her the opportunity to hone her leadership quality.

As a strong organiser she planned her birthday theme and helped with the packing of the goodie back.  Since it's the cny and she wanted a frozen cake, daddy came up with a combination theme ie Eastern Freeze! We used cny bags to bag the party favours which includes pineapple tarts,  egg rolls,  wang wang, sweets and gold coin chocolates and of course her favourite kinder surprise eggs! She didn't want to give out balloons to each child this year but asked for a big helium frozen balloon as centrepiece instead.  Nathan and papa were in-charged of picking up the balloons.  And of course he too did not forget to select one for himself. . A teenage mutant ninja turtle balloon.

On the day itself she was dressed as Elsa and was asked to stand at the front of the assembly.  The kids sang happy birthday to her and she returned her Thanks with a solo piece of "twinkle twinkle little stars". I was so impressed that she simply stood there and sang to the entire cohort. What a great sport!

A private cake cutting session was arranged at 0930 and Nathan assisted with the distribution of the goodie bags. Both the kids had a jolly good time that day and we ended the day on a high with loads of fun at kidzamaze!

36 weeks

Survived cny without surprises.  Baby is still packing on the weight and gynae estimated his weight to be 2.5kg at this stage.  He gained another 0.5kg over the last 2 weeks.  My weight is now 67kg. Overall I've put on about 10kg.

At 36 weeks 4 days baby is shedding most of the downy covering of hair that covered his body as well as the vernix caseosa, the waxy substance that covered and protected his skin during his nine-month amniotic bath. According to babycentre site,  baby swallows both of these substances, along with other secretions, resulting in a blackish mixture, called meconium that will form the contents of his first bowel movement.

At the end of this week, baby will be considered "early term." (Full-term is 39 to 40 weeks. Babies born before 37 weeks are pre-term, 41 weeks is late term, and those born after 42 are post-term.)

As for the rest of the family, Chris will be out of town from Wed to Fri.  Hope baby will wait for daddy to be home and not pop this week!

Gong gong will be seeing a urologist today.  I hope he will get some relief thereafter and condition improves. He has been tortured every night with sleep depravation and with another grandchild there may be more disturbances in the night.

Braxton hicks & birth list

First day of CNY and I am feeling a general tightness around the base of my bump.  Pain was consistent but didnt last for a consistent duration to qualify as contraction.  Suppose it's braxton hicks .... I have forgotten how contractions felt. May just be the violent kicks that were executed by his somersault stunts.

Tonnes of work are waiting for me.  Hopefully I get to finish it before baby's arrival.  If he arrives today.... It will mean that Natalie and him will share the same birth date.

Got the birth bag list done up since it could be anytime from this week onwards. The family can't wait to see him!

35 weeks

At 35 weeks, the baby now weighs about 2 kg. Doctor Watt mentioned that this may be the largest baby of the 3 if he is brought to full term. Natalie was 2.94 at 36 weeks and she said she could have been huge too if she hadn't come early. No wonder I felt like such a giant who had no place to hide and one who stomp into meetings with huffs and puffs though I tried hard to sneak in and not let my presence felt. It got worse at 3rd trimester as I put on about 18kg in total.

When i had Nathan i was big too and weight gained was more on me than on him. Although I was expecting a boy I was large all over, people could see me waddling from afar. What's more I hurt my pelvic as I suffered a slip and the pain kind of permeates since early days of my third pregnancy.

This pregnancy I have put on about 10kg todate.  Average women would have put on between 11kg and 13.6kg and at this stage the weight gain would have hit its peak. Even the belly button has got bigger and mine has popped outward since early days... serves as the doorbell between dad and the kiddos.

Majority of the weight seems to be in the tummy.  Not sure if it's because of the fact that I am having a son.. The shape of the bump is alot more sharper and people told me that they couldn't tell that I was pregnant from the back.

Natanael is quite an active baby who loves to do somersaults in my tummy.  His elbows tends to protrude from my stomach when he stretches and squirms about. He has a higher tendency to get hiccups. .. not sure why the frequency is more frequent than the other 2.. was it due to the invasive tests?

From the exterior, i could tell that the my belly stretches thinner and thinner each day. As I am kinda fair.. The vessels are quite obvious in the area surrounding the bump. Bodily pain around  pelvic and especially the pubic bone aches really badly whenever I shift or change my posture... Particularly when I am lying down the pressure is unbearable and each morning I had to slowly crawl out of bed. Shifting from left to right is such a daunting task. Sometimes I feel so crushed by baby but as the rest of the kids are sleeping on my left I simply don't have any room to move.  Lest getting up. Chris has to help support me out of bed every morning.  Without him as the crutch I think I will continue to lie there for at least half an hour and never get to work on time.

I am starting to feel breathless and heart burn  / indigestion feels like the norm now that the top of my uterus is up under the ribs. I can't walk as fast now and each step comes with great agony.  Doc Watt asked if I felt contraction already...Sometimes I can't quite make out the difference between pain and contractions from braxton hicks. It just feels like your body is cramping and holding everything in together.  Doc checked the cervix length and confirmed that I have another few weeks to go.  Hopefully,  kiddo won't come during cny so I can at least catch up with my beauty sleep.

Well i am still undecided on his chinese name yet.  Will need more time to think.... ☺

Gifts of encouragement

To get Nathan to wake up each morning you'll need the following recipes:-
A million tonnes of patience;
A billion kisses to nurse the separation anxiety;
A zillion persuasions to chide him into showering and stop the whining which ends up with daddy screaming at him to stop.

Well, this routine slowly evolves as days past.. and we didn't want it to turn into a screaming habit between daddy and son.

So I invented a game. Game of who wakes up earlier to shower and complete their breakfast on time without agitating daddy.

And the winner gets a prize at the end of the week.

Guess what it worked!

Nathan got himself a transformer toy and jiejie the supporter who plays a big role in persuading didi to complete the tasks gets a complimentary present as well.

Good job babies!

Artworks

At 3 years old, Attached was Nathan's version of the swimming pool.  He drew the family having a good time at the pool and we we were all stretching our hands apart and floating in the waters.

Loves his technique as he uses quite a fair bit of strength to ensure that all the whites on the paper were covered.

Natalie loves to draw princesses and castles since young and at 5 years old, the theme hasn't quite changed but with added variations with explanatory notes and details to depict a story.

Lego

My favorite toy was Lego. It had accompanied me throughout my childhood and we had fun building imaginary toys out of the little blocks.  However from what I can recall, we didn't quite build structures of mirror image nor complex transports or animals out of it. I remembered building tall  swords, towers and gardens on the patch of green lego base but that's as complex as it had ever gotten.

Watching the kids over the weekend and observing the structures which they've developed was such an eye opener.

Natalie loves to build houses or structures with precision and half of it most often mirrors the other side.

Nathan builds complex transport like pirate ships and aeroplane models equipped with weaponry to fight off bombardments.

It was such a treat watching them push their imaginations and literally surprising you with structures and features which they would explain during the process of modelling.  I was utterly impressed!

Transformer

Been trying to help Nathan reconstruct the toy from a robot back into the trailer.  It was a super daunting task as we never managed to get it done right even at the point when Chris bought it. We spent hours trying to get the toy together. Nathan simply refused for me to give up.  He will bug me and plead with me time and again to get it fixed properly so he could steer it likes the rest of his car models.  Finally got it right after 6 hours of research ..... struggling with Japanese instructions and....loads of trial and error! I doubt if daddy  will have such patience even though it was  his toy to begin with!  The beaming face and of course  together with a big hug and "thank you mama!"made it s all worth it!

The preggy me

Look at how big n bulky i look!
We have decided to induce Nathanael as Chris had to travel the to various cities over the course of next week and i do not wish to deliver the baby without him to cheer me on!

Told the kids the night before and these little ones are now mentally prepared that mummy will not be sleeping with them in the air con room post delivery to aid my recovery.  They were extremely sad to hear this...and here they are bidding farewell at 0530 that faithful Friday morning. Both kids woke up way earlier than needed and were just as excited to welcome their little baby brother!

What's Papa?

This is the current definition of daddy in Natalie's eyes:-

Papa= playground (slide + penguin walk+ penguin fly+ penguin dance+ boxing opponent) + mattress + handkerchief (she always wipes her hands and mouth on his shirt) + cosy armchair + computer & phone device provider ......to be continued.

Erm never the "hunky papa" which Chris will always request for as an endearment nick.

Oh but Nathan has no qualms about calling his dad "hunky papa" in public whenever he asks for favours or special goodies like chocolates & ice cream. .. trick which he latches on and never fails to please the daddy ... and thus the none rejection

First day of school

The kids were so looking forward to school after having rested at home for 1.5 months.

Particularly Natalie who was so excited to know who will be her new K2 teacher even though she secretly wished that  黄老师 could continue to serve as her Chinese teacher.  Nathan on the other hand didn't quite warm up to the idea of school until he tasted his first meal there.  This funny little boy was so excited when he shared the highlight of his day. ... which was all about eating Coco crunch and drinking milo, and playing table toys.  Well at least it looks like a good start and he is starting to enjoy school.

However the first day was not without its usual hiccups.  Gong gong who oversee their morning bus ride arrived on time to ensure that both kids had their breakfast and all  already for school.  Together they waited for more than 15 minutes before the school bus arrived.  Jie jie whose lesson starts at 0800 only managed to reach school at 0820 that day. She had to find her class on her own and fortunately kids know each other and are familiar with the school's layout... so she wasn't traumatised...But making her own way up to storey 3 and facing the embarrassment of being recognised as a late comer would be too harsh for myself to bear on the first day.

So transport pick up at 855am is totally unacceptable! We complained to both the school and bus coordinator and it's closer to the end of the first week without any resolution.  Coordinator sounded unwilling to change the timing and incompetent to do so. We just hope this gets resolved quickly so we can kick start our routine.  Else Chris would rather send them to school himself in order for the kids to arrive comfortably to participate in assembly.

De-clutter

As part of my new year resolution,  i went on a De-cluttering spree and followed marie kondo's organising method. Although I didn't quite throw away items that only bring joy when used, particularly maternity wear since they still serve a function,  her folding methods were quite helpful and makes it easy to identify individual pieces relatively easily. Attached are the results of my efforts.

i come to realise that Categorising and Sorting clothes in similar colours makes it easier to mix and match and only now do I truly see the amount of clothes I have in my possession!  I kept thinking I didn't have any decent t-shirts or home clothes but hey.... The volume that you see here doesn't quite justify the perception!  Well. .. I do hope the tidiness will last and it won't be transformed back into an avalanche of mess any time soon!

Extracted from Guardian:-

Part of what makes her method unusually speedy is that instead of decluttering room by room, she tackles belongings by subject, starting with what is easiest to part with. So, all the clothes, then all the books, then documents, then miscellany and, last and most difficult, photos and mementos.

Instead of deciding what to get rid of, she says, the focus should be on what to keep: which few things spark sufficient joy or are truly necessary.

After joyfully relegating mountains of unneeded or unloved belongings to charity or the bin, she turns to organising what is left. The key, she says, is storing things mostly in drawers, arranged so everything can be seen at a glance and nothing is stacked, a practice decidedly unkind to items at the bottom.

So T-shirts and socks (the ones you’ve kept because they make you happy) are rolled and arranged beautifully, like sushi in a bento box. Cupboards are meticulously reorganised to fit everything from electric fans (at the bottom) to spare blankets (on top).

Papers and documents – there won’t be many since few are truly necessary and they generally hold so little joy.

“The inside of a house or apartment after decluttering ... becomes a place where there are no unnecessary things, and our thoughts become clear,” she says.

“It is the place where we appreciate all the things that support us. It is where we review and rethink about ourselves.”

10 tips to make you more tidy now

Forget everything you’ve been taught about decluttering. Japanese tidiness expert Marie Kondo has tips that will transform your home from unmanageable mess to ordered haven

10 APRIL 2014 } by Psychologies

We’ve read ALL the guides to decluttering – and you probably have too. If you’re like us, they’re taking up space in the third drawer down – that famous one where you put the things you’re going to deal with ‘some day’. Well, that’s all over now. Here are ten radical but highly effective ways to banish the mess – forever. Marie Kondo argues that if you tidy your home properly now, you’ll never need to declutter again. Take a deep breath, lose your received wisdom about cleaning and tidying, and read on...

1 DO IT ALL AT ONCE, AND DO IT NOW Ignore all the advice about tidying for 15 minutes at a time, or getting rid of one thing a day, or starting with the bedroom. You need to set aside some time and tackle everything all together. But do it as soon as possible.

2 DISCARD FIRST, SORT AND TIDY LATER ‘Do not even think of putting your things away until you have finished the process ofdiscarding,’ says Kondo. ‘As soon as you think, “I wonder if it will fit in this drawer,” the work of discarding comes to a halt. You can think about where to put things when you’ve finished getting rid of everything you don’t need.’

3 START WITH THE EASY STUFFDon’t begin by going through old photo albums or love letters. These are the hardest things to throw away. Unless you’re a style maven and clothes are your ultimate passion, you need to begin with your wardrobe, move on to books, then papers, miscellaneous items (e.g. kitchen equipment) and, lastly, items of sentimental value.

4 PUT EVERYTHING IN EACH CATEGORY IN ONE PLACE FIRST If you’re sorting and tidying clothes first, find every bit of clothing in every part of your home. Kondo says when she’s working with clients she warns them that anything they don’t bring to her at this stage is going in the bin. Tell yourself the same thing, and you’ll find anything that’s of value. Anything else probably isn’t that important to you.

5 THROW AWAY EVERYTHING YOU DON’T LOVE If you want to achieve true tidiness, you need to really think about the things you are throwing away – don’t throw away randomly, instead hold each item in your hand and think about its meaning to you. Kondo says that if the item ‘brings you joy’, you’ll feel it straight away. If it doesn’t, it’s time to let it go. I found this method particularly useful for the two non-essential sets of possessions I also happen to love – clothes and books. As Kondo says, ‘Pick them as if you were identifying items you loved from a display in your favourite shop.’

6 DITCH YOUR PAPERWORKThis one is tough, but ultimately fair. Time to throw away elaborate filing systems. Kondo argues that all your paperwork should fit in one place, in two groups – papers to be saved, and papers to be dealt with. This means being absolutely ruthless about what you keep. Gone are the electrical manuals. Think about how often you go back to use them – never, right? If you really need to figure a part out, most information can be found online now. Ditto old bills, credit card statements and payslips. The only thing you need to keep are contracts (employment, mortgage, lease, etc) and insurance policies. Avoid piles of papers – store them in an upright holder to avoid the collection getting too big.

7 LET GO WITH LOVE (GIFTS AND KEEPSAKES) This one is truly life-changing. You know that hideous vase you keep because Great Aunty Maureen gave it to you when you first moved out of home? It’s OK to say goodbye. Kondo recommends quietly thanking the person who gave it to you and the item itself for its time with you, and then putting it in the charity pile. Sounds nuts, but strangely enough it works to get rid of the guilt. Dithering over old love letters? Ask yourself why you’re keeping them. Do they bring you joy? Or is there a reason you’re holding onto that part of your life? If you can honestly say you feel happier holding on to them, fine. Otherwise, let them go with love...

8 DON’T BUY EXPENSIVE OR COMPLICATED STORAGE EQUIPMENT Kondo claims to have tried every kind of storage on the market in Japan and says ultimately the only thing that is truly useful is a shoe box. Our insatiable need for ‘better storage’ comes from having too much stuff in the first place – and once stored away in your latest pretty box from IKEA, your things are forgotten about and you’ve just added another box of stuff to your life. Shoe boxes can be used in a drawer to store tights in neatly packed upright folds (see picture below) or, in a kitchen, used to store baking pans and trays upright instead of piled on top of each other.

9 LEARN HOW TO FOLD CLOTHES – THEN STORE THEM ‘STANDING UP’ With the exception of heavy coats and trousers, delicate dresses and suits, most items of clothing do better folded than hung, and properly folded clothes take up far less space – Kondo claims that ‘depending on thickness you can fit from 20 to 40 pieces of folded clothing in the same amount of space required to hang 10’. Watch Kondo’s folding video here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aBo_MS6CSQ

To store your newly folded clothes, don’t press them down on top of each other in piles, says Kondo. Allow them to ‘breathe’ – and help yourself to locate them more easily and use things in more regular rotation by standing folded clothes upright at the height of the drawer they’re in.

10 TREAT YOUR POSSESSIONS LIKE PEOPLE This one might take a bit of getting used to but Kondo recommends an ongoing ‘dialogue’ with your things, which will allow you to sense more readily when it might be time to let them go. She says, ‘We often hear about athletes who take loving care of their sports gear, treating them almost as if they were sacred...Our belongings work really hard for us.’ Caring for your possessions is the best way to make sure they support you, their owner, for longer. (Turns out your granny was right about caring for your clothes after all…)
